FALLS CREEK There’s
something about leaving
the car behind and
enjoying a holiday
entirely surrounded by
snow-laden snow gums…it’s
truly away from the ‘every
day’. Falls Creek is the
envy of many for its size,
the quality of its
encouraging intermediate
terrain and, at its heart,
a magic village that
offers ski-in/ski-out
accommodation. Add
reliable snow falls, an
extensive snowmaking
system, and three
snowboarding terrain parks
and there is plenty of fun
to be had. But Falls Creek
has more than just skiing
for your winter holiday,
with over 25 cafés or
restaurants, Australia’s
only freestyle snow tubing
park, snow biking, snow
shoeing, snowmobile rides
and even a cinema. It’s a
perfect winter playground.
Intermediates have
enormous choice with
easy-cruising and wide
open terrain on areas like
Ruined Castle or Boomerang
and the ability to turn up
the pitch and the
challenge on runs like
Quartz Ridge and
Powderkeg. Falls Creek
also has a comprehensive
cross-country trail
network so you can explore
the beauty and history of
Australia’s Alpine High
Country. The accommodation
varies from
backpacker-style to
top-class lodges with
five-star dining.There are
also good choices in
self-contained
accommodation.
MOUNT HOTHAM
Perched high on a ridge, Mt Hotham has some of the most spectacular mountain scenery
around.
Hotham’s terrain is dramatic too, with some very challenging slopes and a well-deserved
reputation for some of Australia’s best quality snow.
There is also plenty of user-friendly terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers and
snowboarders, including the vast Orchard area serviced by three quad chairlifts.
New developments over the last few years have seen a dramatic increase in Hotham’s
accommodation and ski-lift facilities.
Restaurants and cafes provide a range of choices, from fine dining through to fast food
options for hungry skiers and snowboarders.
MT BULLER
Few mountains can beat Mt Buller for impact, especially with a full cover of snow on a sunny day.
Even on the approach, through the rolling hills near Mansfield, it dominates the skyline with its
huge white-backed ridge. Easy access, a superb terrain mix and an interesting selection of
non-ski/snowboard activities add to Mt Buller’s appeal.
The mountain has some of Australia’s steepest terrain, but it also has some long and
encouraging runs like Family Run or Little Buller Spur to help skiers and snowboarders find
their feet. Accommodation is family-friendly and mostly ski-in/ski-out, with good choices in
self catering lodges and apartments and fully catered lodges and hotels.
